Important Information on Working with Chemicals in Cold Weather

As temperatures drop, it's crucial to adapt chemical storage, handling and safety procedures to maintain effectiveness and prevent accidents. Always stay safe and prepared by ordering the necessary products.

Here is Kersia’s important advice to ensure safe and efficient operations in colder conditions:

1. Chemical Storage and Handling in Cold Weather

  • Impact of Cold on Chemicals:

  • Chemicals stored outside can become more viscous or freeze.

  • Example: Some caustic detergents may freeze at temperatures as high as +12°C, while long cling foams may suffer damage if frozen.

  • Recommended storage temperature: Above +5°C to prevent damage and maintain efficacy.

  • Heated Storage Solutions:

  • For chemicals stored in heated vessels or bulk tanks, ensure systems like lagging, heating, and pumps are inspected and serviced before winter.

  • Acclimatisation:

  • Always bring chemicals into the factory and allow them to reach factory temperature before use for accurate dosing and dilution.

  • Alternative Products:

  • In some cases, switching to alternative caustic products during the winter may be necessary. Consult with your Local Sales Consultant if unsure about chemical performance in low temperatures.

2. Preventing Slip and Trip Hazards

  • Proactive Measures:

  • Predict adverse weather and apply de-icing products to prevent ice formation on pathways and roadways.

  • Emergency Readiness:

  • Have a supply of snow clearance tools, slip warning signs/cones, and de-icing products readily available.

  • Staff Safety:

  • Minimizing ice-related risks protects employees and visitors from potential injuries.

3. Maintaining Chemical and Product Stocks

  • Stock Planning:

  • Ensure adequate inventory of chemicals and hygiene products to maintain factory and equipment cleanliness.

  • Weather-Proof Logistics:

  • Be prepared for potential delivery disruptions caused by adverse weather by keeping extra stock on hand.
