Meet the Kersia UK R&D Team – Innovating for a Safer Future

At Kersia, our R&D teams play a critical role in shaping the future of food hygiene and safety. With 12 R&D sites around the globe, including microbiology laboratories in France & Ireland and a state-of-the-art Technical Centre in England, we’re committed to pioneering disruptive innovations that enhance food safety across farms and food industry settings. But who are the brilliant minds driving this innovation forward? Meet our Kersia UK R&D team—scientists, problem-solvers, and innovators who are passionate about making a difference.

Martin Garland – R&D Chemistry Director
With a background in pharmacy and a deep fascination for infectious diseases, Martin leads Kersia’s R&D Chemistry team with a vision to drive global collaboration. His passion for innovation extends beyond the lab—he’s a modern-day alchemist who blends science and philosophy to inspire resilience in personal and professional life. Martin’s favourite thing about Kersia? The energy and passion of its people. And if he could have a superpower? The ability to fly—to gain new perspectives and experience the rhythm of different places firsthand.

Andrew McStay – R&D Chemist
Andrew is dedicated to sustainable innovation in food hygiene, ensuring that chemistry plays a role in reducing environmental impact. He’s particularly proud of his work on the Sustainable Matrix project, which has not only influenced the industry but also strengthened his confidence in formulating new solutions. Outside of work, you might find him skiing, cooking, or testing his skills on the golf course. If he could wield a superpower, he’d choose Dr. Strange’s time stone—to speed up testing and formulation processes for faster, more effective results.

Susanne Reid – R&D Chemist
For Susanne, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s an integral part of every project she takes on. She recently led the first field trials of a new teat dip with outstanding results, reaffirming the impact of her work. When she’s not innovating in the lab, she’s hitting the pavement for a run, whether racing competitively or simply enjoying the scenery. Her ideal superpower? The ability to glimpse into the future—to stay ahead of food safety challenges before they arise.

Steven Ackers – Investigational Research Manager
With 17 years of experience, Steven is a problem-solver who thrives on exploring new approaches. He’s particularly proud of establishing a culture of knowledge-sharing at Kersia, ensuring that insights and expertise are passed on for greater innovation. Outside of work, he channels his creativity into baking and photography. Given the choice of a superpower, he’d opt for teleportation—to travel effortlessly and experience more of the world’s wonders.

Ryan Clark – Investigational Research Assistant
Ryan combines his love of chemistry with his investigative mindset to solve complex research challenges at Kersia. One of his proudest achievements? Pinpointing the freezing points of key formulations—a meticulous process that required patience and precision. When he’s not playing detective in the lab, he’s experimenting with bold dessert creations for his dream catering business. If he could choose any superpower, he’d go for a photographic memory—to absorb research knowledge effortlessly and apply it with precision.

At Kersia, our R&D team is more than just a group of scientists—they’re passionate individuals dedicated to pushing the boundaries of food hygiene innovation. Their commitment to sustainability, knowledge-sharing, and problem-solving is shaping the future of food safety worldwide.
