Meet the Team – David Childs, Technical Service Manager
David Childs’ journey into food hygiene wasn’t exactly planned - it was the result of a childhood love for science, an unexpected encounter, and a passion for problem-solving. Growing up in the Highlands of Scotland, David was fascinated by biology and chemistry, spending hours with his microscope and chemistry set. “At one point, I think I nearly gassed myself in the kitchen making chlorine gas at the age of 11!” he recalls.
His enthusiasm for science led him to study Biotechnology at Strathclyde University. Initially, he envisioned a career in research, but a chance meeting with a former university colleague on a Hogmanay night in Glasgow changed everything. That conversation led him to his first role in the food industry - and he hasn’t looked back since.
Driving Innovation at Kersia
Since joining Kersia in 2014, David has been at the forefront of innovation. One of his proudest achievements was spearheading the development of Kersia’s validation, verification, and monitoring catalogue. “Back in 2016, we were turning over around £300K in chemical titration and allergen tests. We launched a printed catalogue, followed by an online version, and introduced new products that help our customers ensure their cleaning and disinfection processes meet the highest standards. Seeing our sales reach nearly £1.3M in 2024 has been an incredible milestone, and one that I am proud to have been a significant part of”
Life Beyond Work
Outside of work, David’s interests are just as diverse. A former member of the Nairn Octopush team (a competitive underwater hockey sport), he admits it was “probably the fittest I’ve ever been!” These days, his hobbies include playing the acoustic guitar, listening to music, and exploring the countryside with his wife, 2 boys and Golden Retriever. “During the summer, my dog even joins me on one of my other passions—stand-up paddleboarding.”
Why Kersia?
What makes Kersia special for David? “From my very first day, I was given a warm welcome by a fantastic team. I love the variety in my role—no two days are the same, and I’m always learning something new. Working together towards a common goal is what makes this company stand out.”
And if he could have one superpower to help with his job? “Definitely the ability to control time. I’d slow it down to get more done—but speed it up into the weekend!”
With a mix of scientific expertise, innovation, and a great sense of humour, David is a valued member of the Kersia team.
