Emma Hounslea, HR Manager
Kersia UK is deeply committed to investing in the progression of its employees, ensuring they have the necessary skills, support, and opportunities to grow within the business. Apprenticeships play a crucial role in this commitment, providing a structured and effective way to develop talent, enhance career prospects, and strengthen the workforce for the future. Whether it’s career progression or succession planning, the apprenticeship route offers employees a practical, hands-on learning experience that builds expertise and confidence in their roles.
This year, National Apprenticeship Week (10th-16th February) is centred around the theme ‘Skills for Life’, highlighting the long-term benefits of apprenticeship programmes. Throughout the week, Kersia is showcasing employees who have embraced apprenticeships as part of their career journey.
Emma Hounslea, HR Manager and Apprenticeship Manager at Kersia UK, emphasises the value of apprenticeships in career development: “Apprenticeships provide employees with hands-on experience while simultaneously developing their theoretical knowledge, which is invaluable for building skills and strengths within a role. Learning in this way is incredibly beneficial—it allows individuals to apply new knowledge in real-time, making them more effective and confident in their positions.”
Kersia’s Commitment to Career Development
Kersia is dedicated to supporting employees who want to progress in their roles or develop professionally. Currently, 13 individuals are enrolled in apprenticeship programmes across different departments, reflecting the company’s commitment to continuous learning. In addition to apprenticeships, Kersia conducts annual appraisal reviews to identify any training needs, giving employees the opportunity to request relevant courses and development opportunities.
“We actively support anyone looking to develop professionally,” says Emma. “Last year alone, around 120 employees participated in training courses ranging from Excel and auditing to train-the-trainer programmes and racking inspections. By investing in employee development, we not only improve productivity and efficiency but also promote job satisfaction and engagement.”
Apprenticeships and Succession Planning
Apprenticeships and training programmes play a key role in succession planning by identifying and developing talented, motivated individuals who may have less experience but show great potential. These programmes equip employees with the specialised skills needed to become future leaders within the business.
According to Emma, “Apprenticeships allow us to recognise potential, nurture talent, and ensure we have a pipeline of skilled individuals ready to step into key roles in the future. At the same time, they help us close skills gaps, ensuring our workforce remains well-equipped to meet future business demands.”
A People-Focused HR Strategy
At Kersia, a people-focused HR strategy means prioritising employee well-being, safety, work-life balance, and career development. The company continuously works towards creating an inclusive and adaptable environment where employees feel valued and supported.
“We listen to our employees and strive to create a culture of support and recognition,” Emma explains. “While it’s not always possible to apply a one-size-fits-all approach, we work hard to make sure everyone has the opportunity to thrive, both professionally and personally.”
Creating a Culture of Value and Motivation
Initiatives like apprenticeships reinforce Kersia’s commitment to investing in employees and their long-term career progression. By providing structured learning opportunities, the company recognises the potential of its workforce and offers clear pathways for advancement. Employees who engage in apprenticeships feel more valued, motivated, and confident in their future within the company, knowing they are part of a business that truly invests in its people.
“Apprenticeships are a clear demonstration of our dedication to career development,” says Emma. “They show employees that we believe in their potential and want to support them in reaching their goals.”
As Kersia celebrates National Apprenticeship Week, the company looks forward to showcasing the inspiring journeys of its employees and reaffirming its dedication to skill development and career growth. Through continued investment in apprenticeships, Kersia is building skills for life and securing a sustainable future for its workforce and business.
